All I ever wanted was this cup of coffee and the sound of those robins waking up the neighborhood, a sort of random day off with nothing better to do than finish that book, practice painting peonies for pages and pages, to gaze at this tabby cat sleeping in a basket high up on a shelf, her tiny snores keeping me company while I balance the check book and put a stamp on renewing my car tabs.

All I ever wanted was this patchwork quilt on a spare bed for my mama when she visits, another chance to hug her, the memory of soaking our feet in the tub after a long day of shopping, to fight again over who gets to pay the bill after a dinner out, hearing that story again, not because it’s so interesting, but just because I like the way she tells it.

All I ever wanted was safe passage through menopause, to someday stop shaving my legs and wearing mascara, for those chin hairs to stop growing back, one two three pairs of reading glasses, clear mammograms and no cavities, to believe that my most beautiful days are ahead and not behind me.

Delightful abandon. Craving it. You?

I had some hard-earned vacation time to use, so I took today and tomorrow off. And despite the long list of things to clean, fix or figure, I'm going to make a few more messes instead. To hell with it.

Here's a little thing that wasn't supposed to be anything at all.

I had just finished up toiling over another piece. I had leftover paint on my pallet, an old ice cube tray. So I decided to just get that delicious color onto some scrap piece of paper. And all while it was going down, I heard my mind saying, "Oh well, this looks like a hot mess. Can't win 'em all." Tossed it aside.

Ten minutes later, all those colors got together and learned how to dance. I gave them some gel pen marks to play with. And this might be one of my favorite surprises so far.

Good things happen when you stop toiling and let go. xoxo

I feel like I owe you an explanation about why I'm wearing my hair in a ponytail for the 384th day in a row. But you know why. Maybe your own hair has been in a braid or under a cap, awaiting the day when hair matters again.

I feel like I owe you a neat little roundup of how I've been managing this global pandemic. Or the murder of George Floyd. Or the wreck our former president has left behind for us. I continue to wake up and think, "What the fuck just happened?"

I feel like we need better words. Like we don't yet have a name for the things we're going through or the stage of grief that hasn't appeared yet.

I feel like I owe you a dozen hugs and a nice long handholding on some porch swing while we soothe each other with sighs and nods and we're-gonna-make-its. Mystery is beautiful, but also lonely sometimes. We've all had to learn how to welcome it, haven't we?

Maybe this is why I've fallen into artmaking recently. I want to practice allowing whatever's next to appear. Yes, even that - the ridiculous, the tragic, the awful, unrefined truth.

I want to practice not having everything figured out, not having a contingency plan for every little thing. I want to get comfortable with the messiness, the absolute chaos of it all and finding myself in a place where skill won't help me one bit - only courage. I want to be ok with wasting paint on a thousand pages.

I want to practice surviving those thousand moments of mystery so perhaps, one day, I won't cling so tightly to my expectations.

Found my charcoal and pastel pencils. So having some fun with mark-making inside colorful gouache abstracts. Lots of splashing around going on because water seems to give everything a mind of its own.

Happy Sunday, everyone. Hope you're able to get some playtime in this weekend. xoxo

April is upon us and I fondly refer to it as "the long wait for green." In Minnesota, the birds and squirrels are starting their springtime antics, but the trees and grass and lilacs are still sleeping, still wrapped in gray and brown, while leftover leaves from last October gather in a dirge against the fenceline. The wind blows, but it's hollow. ⠀

Here's your Sunday snapshot.

I'm learning that painting is a lot like writing. I try to get out of the way and just let the unconscious be free, just get a lot of stuff on the paper. When I feel the piece is complete, I sometimes don't even remember being involved. I just stand back and enjoy the story that has unfolded for me. xoxo

People love to give me journals.

And I love receiving them and putting them to good use. I have more journals than I can fill, but that's ok. A stack of unused journals on the shelf is a mountain of possibility, and having lots of them means I don't have to be too precious with the one I'm working in. I can just scribble and find out what happens.

Poems, flowers, patterns, collages happen!

I don't think the paper in this handmade journal is meant for watercolor or wet medium of any type. I'm testing it out with some Derwent Inktense water-soluble pencils.
