Expect plenty of prompts, experimentation, freedom, self-discovery and sharing.

I started a ten week course with @louisefletcher_art today.

It’s a course in finding your joy in an art practice. And day one, I’m already feeling so much tension. I love a good assignment, but I also hate being given limitations, especially with time. I’ve taken all manner of personality tests and one thing is consistent – I have very low urgency. I do not like to hurry or act hastily. I don’t like to make quick decisions or just ‘wing it.’ My intuition is vibrant, but she moves like sleepy jellyfish.

Today’s journal page is inspired by a @sarabareilles song called Once Upon Another Time. It’s about being boundless and free. I was supposed to just paint for the duration of the song, but now you know that isn’t something I tend to abide. So I just put the song on a loop. And I could seriously listen to that one song on loop all day.

Somewhere early on, I got VERY frustrated and tossed the brushes aside and just started painting with my fingers. Not the first time that has happened. When I did that, I started to enjoy painting so much more, trying to work as fast as I could, stopping before my thinky brain got too involved.

I might try this each day this week with the same song and see what else I can learn about my willingness to be free.

Sometimes you just have to let life unfold for a while.

The last week has been about catching up on essentials. It’s been about looking outward, enjoying the landscape, being in service to the needs of others. Less introspection, more ‘chop wood, carry water.’ What would we have to write about or paint about if we didn’t spend time in the swirl of the world?

I was also waiting for delivery of some new inks and tools, which arrived late yesterday. So all night, I slept in a state of anticipation. You know the feeling, right?

This morning, it was pure play, experimentation and discovery in my sketchbook. I’m drawn to texture, lines and colors that I can find in nature – so I’m dabbling with that. As you can see, I’m mixing, mixing, mixing in my little cups.

Color is an amazing thing. But sometimes contrast and texture are even more amazing.

What if….?

That is the question I’m playing with these days.

What if I tried ink? What if I drew it on the paper with the end of stick? Or maybe just straight out of the dropper?

What if I watered down the acrylic paint so much that it started to act like watercolor? What if the marks showed through underneath? Would it bloom like watercolor? What will happen when I use a dry brush to ‘mop up’ the puddles?

What if I tried white ink? Would it act like the black ink? Or would it be more transparent? What about red oxide? Will marks show through that?

What if I added a drop of black to this violet shade? Would it be too muted? Or just right?

What if I kept the leftover paint in these plastic cups with lids? Will it still be wet and usable tomorrow?

What if I fell in love with a journal page?

Today, I finally got my glasses.

In April, I went to a local O.D. for an exam, since I hadn’t had a proper eye exam in like thirteen years. I had misplaced the expensive prescription lenses I bought back then (of course!) and have been fumbling around with the $3 readers you can pick up at the craft store. Been ok for reading, but I’ve been having a problem with computers.

So they talked me into these $700 fancy progressive lenses. But when they arrived, they were terribly blurry and everything looking double. So they took them back to try again. Well, FOUR tries later, they still couldn’t get them right. I got a refund, despite their ‘no returns for any reason’ policy.

After a bit of searching, I found a pair of progressive readers at readingglasses.com that are made for reading and computer distance. I felt like it was worth a shot, so I ordered them up and they arrived just two days later. Guess what? They work great!! I love the frames (super lightweight). And I’m head over heels for the price.

Now I can see all the things!!!

#fyjtaster21 assignment 4: create four mixed media compositions from a list of limited specified ingredients and colors. Somewhere in those layers, you'll find pencil marks, pen marks, charcoal, collage, oil pastel and gold flake.

The goal of this exercise was to show how much you can do within limitations and how many ideas it can actually help to generate.

I think it was just a great excuse to play with ALL the fun media and tools. In the end, I love getting up close into the 'world' of the colors and marks. It's otherworldly.

I am proof that you don’t need a fancy studio to make some art.

Not shown in this photo is a very small work table pushed up against a wall in this room, which has to serve as a guest room, work-from-home office and art studio.

But sometimes I want to work on a bigger piece or with bigger paper. Option one: carry all my crap downstairs to the dining room table.

Or option two: put a big piece of mdf whiteboard down on the bed.

This setup is genius for a couple of reasons. I don’t have wall space to hang a large piece, or floor space for a clunky easel. I considered buying a table-top easel, but I really need the space on my table for other things. Having my work down low means I can use a rolling chair/stool or I can stand up to get some distance. I can use the whiteboard surface as a palette – the dry paint scrapes off easily. Or I can put down Press n Seal so I can peel it up and throw it away.

When I’m not working on large art or I need the bed to be a bed, I prop the whiteboard up on the back of my work table and use it to brainstorm or plan.

And the cat can supervise whilst sending her little hairs into the wet paint. Yeah, it’s not perfect, but it’s working just fine.

Tell me – do you have any hacks that help you get your creative fix? xoxo

Took a little trip outside my comfort zone.

The #fyjtaster2021 assignment from @louisefletcher_art – make two pieces. The first one, using colors and tools you don’t normally use. The second one, use your favorite colors and tools, but bring in at least one element from the first one you really enjoyed.

To be honest, I didn’t enjoy making the first one – black and white acrylic done entirely with a palette knife. I guess I get a lot of joy from color and acrylic still frustrates me.

Watercolor is definitely fun for me and I’m leaning toward these soft, calm tones. I brought in those fun, scratchy, grassy markings.

What do you think? Do you like the top one or the bottom one?

Numinous is the perfect word to describe a courageous leap into writing or art-making.

Some might say it’s a spiritual experience, that the creative unconscious is whispering in our ear or guiding our hand.

It’s how we are led into the mystery of an adventure, lured by the muse over hot coals.

It’s the divine energy that calls us to sacrifice our fears in the name of beauty, discovery or freedom.

Numinous is ominous, yet inspiring.

The Turn the Page museletter sent out to inboxes this afternoon includes a thrilling poem from Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer, a way to make something amazing from a crack in the sidewalk, and prompts to inspire your journaling, art or photography in the month of June.

My wish for you this month is to let yourself be thrilled by simple pleasures and unexpected experiences. Try on the idea of making something from nothing every day - even something like a five-line poem or a five-minute drawing. Feel the thrill of not knowing, and the delight of letting inspiration find you through the cracks in the sidewalk or the drip of coffee left on a napkin.

Find links to the letter or to subscribe in the quick links found in my bio.

I struggled to choose a focus for June. In fact, I JUST decided this morning.

I have too many ideas, so if I really want to choose something to focus on, I can hold it loosely. I will allow myself to zig and zag, ebb and flow with wherever my intuition decides to take me.

The thing I love about creating landscapes is the ability to stay loose and not get too wrapped up in tiny, little details. I’m still learning how to use my supplies and tools, so having more freedom to experiment is a good thing.

Yet, landscapes are made up of trees and skies and water, so there’s also opportunity to dabble in the details when I’m called to zoom in.

I’m thinking landscape watercolors, landscape oil pastels, landscape acrylic, landscape collage, landscape drawing (and maybe there will be a bird for my friend @ajmeier5315 ). If you have a landscape photo you think would inspire me this month, send it on over. xoxo

Wow, the month flew by. I think I created some kind of art or writing every day during May. And many, many flowers as a result of my ‘project’ to immerse myself in May flowers.

Today’s ‘grand finale’ (but let’s be honest, there will be a ton more floral artwork to come), came with some great lessons for me.

1 – I’m allowed to use my fingers!!!
2 – White is more than white.

And thank you to all who have served our country, present and past. I’m SO grateful for all that has been sacrificed for my freedom.

Ahhhh. Friday.

Tomorrow begins a nice long break from work for me. I’m taking a staycation next week.

Now, as usual, I thought of about fifteen practical things I could get done with that kind of time. You know – the cleaning, fixing, mowing, fetching, disposing, organizing kind of things that pile up when you’re head-down paying the bills.

But then I had this radical idea: What if I just ignored all that and instead, I wrote and made art the ENTIRE time? Too indulgent? Too irresponsible? Too selfish?

Or too perfect?

Insight Writing®

When we let go of perfection and allow the voice of our true stories to be heard and expressed, we begin to understand who we really are – underneath the costumes we wear in everyday life. We begin to reconnect to the parts of ourselves that hold gentle wisdom and insight, and we’re able to relax into our authentic selves.

Experience Insight Writing in a group or on your own. I’ve created a number of ways to guide and encourage you.
